Languages in Ghana:

Akan is a tone language where the melody decides what a word means. Who speaks Twi (pronounced as "Tschwi") also learns to think another way: in words, in images, in stories that have been passed on for generations. Many in ghana Diaspora understand fragments, but do not dare to answer. This is where our courses are set.

What is the difference between Akan and Twi?

Many interested in Twi quickly encounter terms like Akan, Ashanti or Asante. This can be confusing, but it doesn't have to.
Twi is not an independent language system, but a dialect of the Akan language
. There are several dialects inside the akan. The most famous are Asante Twi, spoken in the Ashanti region around Kumasi and Akuapem Twi from the Eastern region. In addition, there is also the fante dialect spread on the coast and Bono in the northwest of the country. All four are closely related and share the same Akan origin.
Don't worry: The Akan languages are so similar that speakers with a little patience and exercise often understand each other. The differences are mainly in the debate and individual words. Whoever learns Asante Twi is understood everywhere.
In Accra, the capital, is actually Ga the local language. Nevertheless, you listen to Twi on the market. It has developed into Lingua Franca, which connects people from all regions of Ghanas. How important the country takes these languages shows a current development: Since October 2025 local languages such as Twi mandatory ghana School Classes.

Why also drums can speak in Ghana

Twi is a sound language. This means that the pitch decides what a word means. The same word, in other words, has a completely different meaning. This property makes Twi not only melodic, but also transferable to instruments.

That's what happens with the Atumpan. These are large, paired wooden drums that are considered royal instruments at the Akan. One drum is tuned deeper, the other higher. Together they can imitate the sound patterns of the language. A drummer plays no music in the western sense, but real words and phrases

When you learn Twi, you automatically train your Listening to sounds and melodies. And at some point you may not only understand the people, but also the drums.

How Twi connects identity and soul

In the Akan culture is a Name far more than one name. He is a spiritual building plan that connects man with his ancestors, his family and the day of his birth. Eight days after birth the so-called outdooring ceremony where the child receives his name.

Every child gets a name that depends on the weekday of his birth. This Nameon Twi Kra Din, connects the child with a certain spiritual energy. Each day, qualities are attributed to the character of the child.

Date Male / female. Connection Characteristics
Sunday Akwasi / Akosua Universe charismatic, spiritual
Monday Kojo / Adwoa Peace quiet, peaceful
Tuesday Kwabena / Abena Ocean energetic, courageous
Wednesday Kwaku / Akua Ananse, the spider creative, intelligent
Thursday Yaw / Yaa Earth grounded, diligent
Friday Kofi / Afia Fertility secluded, artistic
Saturday Kwame / Ama God wise, authoritarian

This system is so deeply rooted that almost all Ghanaians, even those in the Diaspora, know their weekly names and use them in everyday life, even if they additionally bear Christian or English names.

In addition to the soul name, the child receives "good name" (Din Pa) from the father, who often honors a ancestor or respected elders. This name was traditionally the last name of the child. Since each child honored another ancestor, even full siblings could carry different surnames. Permanent family names in the western sense only prevailed with colonization.

Weekday names are not only available with the Akan. The Ewe in Ghana and Togo and the Baoulé in the Ivory Coast know this system and connect birthday with spiritual qualities.

The visual language of the Akan

The Akan culture not only expresses itself in language, but also in symbols, fabrics and gestures. Adinkra symbols, Kente fabric and the visual language of the hands carry messages that have been passed on for centuries.

Adinkra – symbols with embassy

The word 'Adinkra' comes from 'Dinkra' and means 'bye'. Originally, stamped substances were carried at funerals to the Died to give a last message.

The most famous tradition leads the symbols to
Gyaman king Nana Kwadwo Agyemang Adinekra back. After a war Ashanti's knowledge as war trophies with to Kumasi.
However, the Englishman Thomas Bowdich already documented Adinkra substances in Kumasi in 1817
Symbols are probably older than the legend tells.

Kente – the fabric of the kings

Kente is the world-famous, hand-woven fabric of the Akan, which consists of narrow, colourful strips. Each colour and pattern has its own meaning.

In modernity Adinkra and Kente often combinedPreviously, Kente and Adinkra were reserved for the nobility. Today they are carried to all festive occasions to express cultural pride and identity.

The symbolism of the hands

Hands play a central role in Akan symbolism, as they represent human action and social connection.

Boa Me Na Me Mmoa Where
(I will help you) stands for Cooperation and mutual dependence. It is based on the saying: "The left hand washes the right and the right washes the left."

Interesting is the contrast to everyday life. In the Ghanaian culture, whether in the Akan, Ga or Ewe, it is considered absolute taboo to hand or receive objects with the left handbecause it is considered unclean.

Good reasons to learn Twi

There is not one reason to learn Twi. But many good. Who speaks a few words Twi at the Makola Market in Accra immediately experiences the difference: Other prices, other discussions, another welcome. Language opens doors that remain closed for English speakers.
Maybe you're family. You understand fragments when the others talk, but answer? It's difficult.

Learning Twi means becoming part of these conversations. Not only to listen, but to listen. Ghana is one of the most stable economic areas in West Africa. Anyone who works with Ghanaian partners, suppliers or teams gains confidence when he speaks their language. Not flowing, but enough to show: I take you seriously.

Or you're planning your December in Ghana. Detty December has long been more than a trend. Every year, it draws thousands from the Diaspora, for concerts, parties, reunion. With Twi, you experience the whole thing differently. You understand the lyrics, the jokes, the mood. You're not a guest, you're part of it.
And if you're not interested in Ghana, Nigeria? Then look at you Yoruba or Igbo on. Detty December is there as well.
